Waianae Mountains Horseback Riding

Location: West Oahu, Oahu

Experience the beauty of O‘ahu’s southern slopes on a guided horseback ride through the Wai‘anae Mountains at Camp Pālehua. Whether you choose a Sunshine or Sunset ride, this adventure offers breathtaking coastal views, a peaceful connection with nature, and an opportunity to ride well-trained polo ponies through conservation land. Opt for a group ride or upgrade to a private experience for a more intimate journey. Perfect for riders of all skill levels, Pālehua Trail Rides provide an unforgettable way to explore the island’s rich landscapes and cultural history.

What to Expect

Arrive at Camp Pālehua 30 minutes before your scheduled ride to check in. After signing a waiver and selecting a properly fitted helmet, you’ll receive a brief safety demonstration before being matched with a well-trained polo pony suited to your size and experience level.

Once mounted, your guide will lead the group along a scenic ridgeline trail, where you’ll take in sweeping views of O‘ahu’s southern and western coastline. The horses move at a steady walking pace, making this ride enjoyable for beginners and experienced riders alike. Keep an eye out for cattle grazing along the trail and native plant species unique to the conservation land.

If you choose the Sunshine Ride, you’ll enjoy the warmth of the midday sun illuminating the mountains and ocean below. Opting for the Sunset Ride means witnessing the sky transform into hues of gold and pink as the sun dips below the horizon—a truly magical sight.

Along the way, the guide will pause for photos at a picturesque lookout point, ensuring you have a lasting memory of your experience. Upon returning to the stables, guests will have the opportunity to feed the horses a treat before concluding their adventure.

Private Horseback Ride

For a more personal experience, the Private Ride offers the same scenic journey but with the exclusivity of your own group. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, planning a romantic outing, or simply seeking a quieter ride, this option allows for a more tailored experience with your guide. The smaller group size allows for more flexibility in pacing and additional opportunities for questions, storytelling, and personalized guidance from your trail leader. As with the group rides, you’ll have a dedicated photo stop along the way, and upon return, you can interact with the horses before concluding your experience.
