Dive with Maui’s resident turtle population (honu), encounter white tip reef sharks, and more on our favorite shore dive at Mala Wharf.
You enter the water and, after a short surface swim, descend on a condemned pier that has transformed into a vibrant reef. Schools of fish surround the wreckage that has accumulated colorful corals and sponges.
Turtles swim all around in organized chaos as you search for camouflaged frogfish, making it hard to decide where to look. You follow your instructor as they lead you through the obstacle course of the wreck, swimming under and through the old dock where you spot a pregnant reef shark resting under a section of cement and pause to admire her beauty. As you make your way back to your starting point you focus on the multitude of turtles that gracefully soar through the clear water.
Since being destroyed by Hurricane Iniki in 1992, Mala Wharf has become the best dive site on Maui. A quick walk from our shop, Mala is home to so much life that if you only have time for one dive while you’re on island, this should be it. In addition to turtles and sharks, the sunken pier is home to large schools of fish, octopus, eels, nudibranchs, and the elusive but popular frogfish!
The Dive team loves diving and all of our dives have the potential to be one hour long, air permitting. Unless otherwise requested, all our shore dives are conducted on 80’s (standard size tanks) which means you can expect close to an hour underwater.
All our shore dives are private or in small groups of no more than 4 divers so you’ll get the most out of your experience. Smaller groups, make it easier for your PADI professional to give you individualized attention and point out the cool stuff.
We’ve been diving Lanai’s Cathedrals for nearly 30 years. Our experienced team are experts at spotting the best wildlife and showing you all the hidden gems hidden underwater and topside.
Our group sizes are small. You’ll receive personalized attention from your instructor who will guide you on two exceptional dives and answer your questions about marine life.
Plus, our team knows divers like to dive; we are the only company that allows you to stay underwater for a full hour on both dives so you can optimize your bottom time.
