The day begins with a morning pick-up from your selected hotels or meeting points. Once everyone is on board, your guide will set the stage for an exciting day, sharing insights about the Big Island’s history, geology, and culture as you head out on the famous Saddle Road. This scenic drive offers breathtaking views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, the two towering volcanoes that define the island’s rugged landscape.
Your first stop is Pe'epe'e Falls, part of the Wailuku River system, where you can admire the cascading waters and learn about the area's volcanic origins. A short drive away, Rainbow Falls awaits—a spectacular waterfall known for its misty rainbows, framed by lush jungle. This is also the site of the historic Battle of Wailuku, an important event in Hawaiian history.
Driving through Hilo’s famous Banyan Drive, lined with century-old trees planted by famous figures, you'll get a glimpse of old Hawaii before heading toward Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Upon arrival, you’ll explore some of the park’s most fascinating features, starting with the Kilauea Overlook, where you can witness the dramatic, ever-changing landscape of one of the world’s most active volcanoes. You’ll visit steam vents, the Puhimau Pit Crater, and the Thurston Lava Tube (Nāhuku), a massive underground tunnel formed by flowing lava. The short rainforest hike to Nāhuku offers a chance to see native plants and birds, making it both an educational and awe-inspiring experience.
Midday, you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic location just outside the park, nestled in a quiet sunbelt area. After lunch, the journey continues to Lava Tree Molds State Park, where ancient lava flows have left behind eerie imprints of trees, providing a unique look into the island’s geological past.
The next stop is the famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. Here, you’ll have time to walk along the striking jet-black sands, feel the warm ocean breeze, and, if luck is on your side, spot Hawaiian green sea turtles basking on the shore.
No visit to this part of the island would be complete without a stop at the legendary Punalu'u Bakery, known for its freshly baked sweetbread and malasadas. You’ll have a chance to savor these local treats before heading to your final destination—a renowned coffee farm in the Ka’u region. Here, you’ll learn about the coffee-making process from bean to cup, enjoy a tasting of premium Hawaiian coffee, and take in the scenic views of the island’s southernmost countryside.
As the tour winds down, you’ll enjoy a scenic drive along the island’s southern coastline, passing the southernmost point of the U.S. before heading back to your drop-off location. Expect to return between shortly after sunset time, filled with incredible memories of the Big Island’s most iconic sights.
